UNIC CLUB OF TORONTO

The UNIC Club of Toronto is a non-profitable organization whose aims and objectives are to lend  helping hands to all sons and daughters of Edo State of Nigeria.  The running and funding of the Club are based on the monthly contribution of its members and the kind donations of people like you when we embark on a project.

HISTORY OF UNIC CLUB OF TORONTO

In summer of 1991, a group of five friends from Edo State of Nigeria came together to form an Association called EDOCAN with the aims of helping each other to secure a landed status and to help newly arrived immigrants to settle down.  At the time, all the members were visitors to Canada.  Their main objective was to donate money to secure the services of a lawyer to help them through their immigration process.

Less than one year later, the membership increase in number, then they decided to elect an official that will represent them in the society.  That was when they formed a committee to draft their first constitution.

In 1993, they elected their first President.  During that time, some of the members that were denied resident status by the Canadian Immigration were given money and all the necessary assistance by the Club to relocate with their families to wherever they choose.

Presently, the Club has twenty members of which ninety percent are now Canadian citizen, while the other ten percent have a landed status.  On that note, the club felt that the original aims and objectives which the founding members had in mind when they founded the Club has been accomplished.

Then in 1998, the Club went through a major change, among which was the changing of the name from EDOCAN to UNIC.  The constitution was also amended to reflect our new vision and shift our focus to render service above self to all indigenes of Edo State and strive to encourage the unity of the Edos in North America.
